Avatar 2 Opening Weekend Box Office Projected To Nearly Double Original

New longer-term Avatar: The Way of Water opening weekend projections for the box office have the sequel nearly double the first film of James Cameron. The original 2009 sci-fi film broke all sorts of box office records on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie ever. Avatar's incredible box office success has also drawn much attention to the amount of money Avatar 2 will make. While no one can predict Avatar 2 to surpass the previous film's $2.9 billion worldwide haul and the film's massive budget and Disney's commitment to the franchise's future means that there's some expectation to Avatar: The Way of Water to succeed.

According to the new long-range tracking offered by Box Office Pro, Avatar: The Way of Water is now projected to make an estimated $135 million on its opening weekend domestically. The Avatar film's original box office debut was a massive $77M in the US, 13 years ago, in December. So the new projections suggest Avatar 2's first weekend at the box office to nearly double the initial. These projections even call for the sequel to bring in $475M domestically by completion of its theatrical run, which is less than previous estimates and roughly half of the amount Avatar produced domestically.

A high first weekend opening for Avatar: The Way of Water could be a fantastic beginning for the sequel's success at the box office. The reported $135M opening would mean the follow-up will make the same amount in just one weekend as took James Cameron's first film a full week to make. However, Avatar 2's box office will still have a tough road to surpass the original. The magic of Avatar's improbable box-office success lies in the film's incredible word-of-mouth advertising and repeat screenings that helped keep the movie relevant and running in theaters for 234 consecutive days. That is unheard of nowadays even for the most popular movies. For reference, Top Gun: Maverick topped out at 161 days in the year.

There's little doubt of the possibility that Avatar: The Way of Water will beat the original movie, but it does not need to become the highest-grossing movie ever to be a success. The anticipation for the sequel has largely squashed the notion that Avatar was not able to make a lasting impression on general audiences. Even even if  Avatar: The Way Of Water Review  is only half that of the original film however, it will still earn $1.3 billion, which would make Avatar 2's record-breaking box office a huge success. This is enough to be the second-highest-grossing film of 2022.

There's still some pressure on Avatar 2's box office to be profitable enough for James Cameron to continue his sequel ideas alive. He's contracted to create three sequels which will include Avatar 3 already completely filmed. Some work is also done to make Avatar 4. The director has acknowledged that If the sequel's box office falls short and the audience is not at all interested, Avatar 3 could be the final installment in the series. In that fashion, Avatar The Water's box-office will play a huge influence on what's the next James Cameron's films.
